Soft hands: the ace that cannot bust you
A soft hand counts its ace as 11, so the next card cannot bust you. Draw too big and the ace counts as 1 instead. That safety net changes the play. Soft hands hit and double far more often than their face totals suggest, because the bust risk that holds hard hands back is not there.
Never stand on soft 17 (A-6). Seventeen sounds like a made hand and is not. A 17 never beats a dealer who finishes a hand. It ties one total and loses to the rest. Standing on soft 17 wins only when the dealer busts. Hitting costs nothing, since you cannot bust, and improves you about half the time. Against 3 through 6, double. That puts money on the dealer's bust risk while your hand cannot be hurt.
The doubling region widens as your total rises. A-2 and A-3 double only against 5 and 6, the two weakest upcards. A-4 and A-5 add the 4. A-6 adds the 3. The weaker your soft total, the more you depend on the dealer busting, so the fewer upcards qualify.

Soft 18 has three different answers. Learn it cold now, because it returns in the famous-cells Lesson. Against 2 through 6, double (at S17 tables the 2 becomes a stand). Against 7 and 8, stand, since 18 is fine there. Against 9, 10, and ace, hit. A dealer showing those makes 19 or better so often that your 18 loses slowly, and a draw that cannot bust is free improvement. Soft 19 doubles against a 6 at H17, our default, and otherwise stands, as does everything above it.
