Why every hand has one right play

The dealer has no choices. The dealer draws to 17 and stops, every hand, and the rule is printed on the felt. That one fact turns blackjack into a math problem with an answer. For any hand you hold against any upcard, each action (hit, stand, double, split, surrender) has an average result you can compute, called expected value. Basic strategy is the action with the best expected value in every spot. It is not a style or a system, and when a play feels wrong, the feeling is what is wrong. Learn it the way you learned the multiplication table. You are not forming an opinion about 16 against a 10. You are learning to produce the answer every time.

The matchup matters more than your hand. A 16 is hopeless against a 10 and comfortable against a 6. Same cards, opposite plays, because the question is never how good your hand is, only whether it is good against what the dealer is likely to make. The upcard tells you the dealer's bust risk, and that risk splits the upcards into two groups. From a 2 through 6 the dealer busts 35–42% of the time, because the rules force draws to stiff totals. Call those weak. From a 7 through ace the dealer usually finishes with 17 or better. Call those strong. Against a weak upcard, take no risks and let the dealer bust. Against a strong upcard the dealer is making a hand, so improve yours or get out.

Perfect basic strategy at a decent table faces a house edge of about 0.66%. We measured it over 20 million simulated hands. Playing by feel gives away an extra one to two percent on top. At $25 a hand, that is the difference between losing about $16 per hundred hands and losing $40 or more. The chart does not beat the game. Only counting does that. The chart does make blackjack the cheapest game in the casino, and the Counting Course assumes you already know it.
