The Running Count at pace

The cards come in a stream and you keep one number in your head, the Running Count, updated card by card. The common failure is not a mistagged card. It is falling behind, panicking, and losing the number.

Count in pairs. Take two cards at a time and cancel before you add. A king and a five is zero as a unit, not −1 then +1. At a full table most pairs cancel or nearly cancel, so pair counting roughly halves the work. When cards land, scan for the cancellations first, then add what is left.

Cancel opposites, then carry only the number below the latest card.

Never say the count in your head. 'Plus seven' takes half a second to say. Holding 7 without words takes none. If you catch yourself narrating, slow the pace until the narration stops, then speed back up.

When you lose the count, and you will, do not reconstruct it. A guess of 'maybe +4' poisons every decision after it. Flat-bet the table minimum until the shuffle and start clean.

Build pace before length. A quarter deck at a fast clip trains more than a full deck at a crawl. This Checkpoint runs half a deck at one second per card. The graduation Checkpoint at the end of the Course is a full deck at casino pace.

Checkpoint: Half deck at 1.0s per card. Final count exact to pass.
